•Scene of a passenger train derailment in the Ulyanovsk region in Russia, today

At least 22 people were injured after a train derailed in Russia’s region of Ulyanovsk, local authorities said today, adding that no one died in the accident.

Seven carriages of the train went off the rails in the region around 900 kilometres (560 miles) east of Moscow.

The train was travelling from the city of Chelyabinsk in the Urals to capital Moscow, Ulyanovsk’s regional governor Alexei Russkikh said.

Television images showed train carriages lying on their side.

“There are no fatalities,” Chelyabinsk region governor Alexei Teksler said on Telegram, adding that at least 22 people were injured.

“Preliminary reports indicate two passengers have fractures… Twenty people suffered bruises, including one child with a bruised leg,” Teksler said.

The cause of the incident was not immediately known.

An investigation into violations of railway safety and operational regulations has been launched, the Russian Investigative Committee said, adding that its investigators had gone to the scene.

The train was carrying 412 passengers, according to an official from the Russian Railways (RZD) quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency.
