•Late House of Reps member, Muhammad Hassan

The House of Representatives has announced the death of a serving lawmaker, Muhammad Danjuma Hassan, describing his passing as a significant loss to the legislature and the country.

Hassan, who represented Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State, died yesterday evening in Abuja after a brief illness. He was 66.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued today by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi Jr..

Until his death, Hassan served as the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary and was elected into the National Assembly in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

The House described his death as a profound loss, noting that he was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost legislative counsel and legal draftsmen.

“With his demise, Nigeria has lost one of its foremost Legislative Counsel and Legal Draftsmen, whose contributions over the years significantly advanced legislative development and constitutional processes in the country. Indeed, many of the laws enacted over past decades bear his enduring imprint,” the statement read.

Before joining partisan politics, Hassan had a long career within the National Assembly bureaucracy, where he rose through the ranks and retired as a Permanent Secretary.

According to the statement, his extensive administrative experience and institutional knowledge greatly enriched legislative work and national discourse.

Within the House, he was described as a diligent and reflective lawmaker who brought professionalism and depth to his assignments.

“As Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, he made valuable contributions informed by deep institutional knowledge, administrative competence, and a firm commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s justice system and upholding the rule of law.”

Hassan also served on several committees, including Public Petitions, Aviation, Solid Minerals, Constitution Review, and Treaties, Protocols and Agreements, where he contributed to legislative oversight and policy development.

The House noted that his interventions during plenary and committee engagements reflected maturity, professionalism, and a strong sense of public duty.

“He was widely respected for his professionalism, depth of legislative experience, and commitment to public service, as well as for his humility, calm disposition, and dedication to consensus-building,” the statement added.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, extended condolences to Hassan’s family, constituents, the government and people of Kano State, as well as his colleagues and associates.

The late lawmaker is expected to be buried later today in accordance with Islamic rites.
