Delta shooting: IGP Disu approves dismissal, prosecution of trigger-happy officer

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman over the killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.

The action follows the outcome of a review by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which examined the incident alongside other internal disciplinary procedures, reports Channels TV.

Addressing an emergency press conference in Abuja, the IGP said the officer involved, along with members of his team, has been recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.

The police panel found that the officer “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.”

The disciplinary committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman, as well as other officers found culpable in the incident.

“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” the IGP said.

The IGP has approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.

The IGP reiterated, in the strongest terms, that the Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions and abuse of power.

“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”

The IGP extended his deepest and most solemn condolences to the family of the deceased, Mene Ogidi. He acknowledged the pain and loss suffered and assured the family that this tragic incident will not be treated lightly.

He added that the Force is fully committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served, in a manner that reinforces public confidence and institutional accountability.

IGP Disu urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, as the Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and the protection of the rights and dignity of all citizens, while ensuring accountability at all levels.

The extra-judicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi by the ASP has sparked outrage online.

According to the police, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that the deceased had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing “a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.”
