2027: Nigerians in Diaspora mobilise support for Peter Obi, urge Nigerians to vote for responsive governance

The FrontierThe FrontierJune 18, 2026 802 Minutes read0

•Peter Obi flies NDC flag

A political organisation aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, has been launched by supporters of Peter Obi, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Diaspora.

Announcing the launch in Umuahia, the Diaspora Coordinator of the NDC and Peter Obi Presidential Campaign in Sweden, Pharm. Ikeagwuonwu Chinedu Klinsmann, called on millions of Nigerians abroad to actively participate in what he described as the “redemption and rebuilding of Nigeria”, reports Daily Independent.

Klinsmann, who made the announcement through a statement, issued today, urged Nigerians across Europe, North America and other parts of the world to unite and queue behind Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the NDC, adding that the 2027 elections would determine whether Nigeria would “descend further into despair or would rise to its full potential.”

The move signals an early effort by Obi’s supporters in the Diaspora to galvanise international backing and grassroots mobilisation ahead of what is likely to be a fiercely contested presidential race in 2027.

Klinsman , a former chieftain of the APC, accused the Tinubu administration of failing to tackle worsening economic hardship, insecurity and poor governance, maintaining that the nation’s current trajectory had deepened poverty and public frustration.

He averred that the economic policies introduced by the Federal Government, such as the removal of fuel subsidy, the floating of the naira etc, have triggered soaring inflation, rising living costs and growing food insecurity, stressing that public debt and youth unemployment have continued to rise.

Klinsmann also cited persistent insecurity across the country, including banditry, kidnapping, insurgency and communal conflicts, saying the government had failed to deliver the turnaround Nigerians were promised.

His word, “There is a growing, unstoppable call for leadership change. Nigerians are rejecting the status quo and turning toward Peter Obi and the NDC as the vehicle for a New Nigeria”.

The Sweden-based coordinator described Nigerians in the Diaspora as a critical force capable of influencing the outcome of the next presidential election through funding, advocacy, voter mobilisation and knowledge transfer.

According to him, with an estimated 17 million Nigerians living abroad and remitting over $20 billion annually, the Diaspora possesses the financial resources, expertise and international networks needed to drive political change and national development.

Klinsmann called on Nigerians overseas to support campaign structures, fund voter education programmes, mobilise relatives at home to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and intensify advocacy for diaspora voting rights.

On the chances of the former Anambra State governor in the 2027 presidential poll, Klinsmann argued that Peter Obi remains the most credible candidate in the presidential race and the only candidate to rescue Nigeria.

He cited his record as governor of Anambra State, “where he was widely praised for fiscal prudence, investment in education and healthcare, and prudent management of public resources”.

Outlining Obi’s proposed agenda under the NDC platform, Klinsmann highlighted plans by the NDC’s candidate to strengthen national security, stimulate production and industrialisation, as well as his programme to expand social investments, tackle corruption and promote inclusive governance.

He further urged supporters to establish and strengthen Obi-NDC chapters across Europe and other regions, organise town hall meetings, raise campaign funds and deploy social media to counter disinformation ahead of the 2027 polls.

“The 2027 presidential election is winnable with our involvement. The NDC is emerging as a credible alternative for Nigerians tired of recycled failures, while Peter Obi represents competence over connections,” he declared.
