JUST IN: DSS orders internal probe after rough-handling of activist Sowore inside courtroom sparks public outcry •VIDEO

The FrontierThe FrontierJune 24, 2026 1761 Minutes read0

Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS), has ordered an internal investigation into the conduct of its operatives following a controversial incident in which activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was forcibly removed from a courtroom.

The move comes amid growing public scrutiny and criticism from legal practitioners, civil society groups, and rights advocates who questioned the circumstances surrounding the confrontation inside the court premises.

Sources familiar with the development said the DSS leadership has directed a review of the actions of the officers involved to determine whether established operational procedures were breached during the incident, reports The Guardian.

The courtroom drama unfolded during legal proceedings when security operatives reportedly moved against Sowore, leading to a tense scene that quickly attracted attention both within and outside the courtroom. Videos and eyewitness accounts of the incident circulated widely on social media, triggering debates over courtroom decorum, citizens’ rights, and the conduct of security personnel in judicial environments.

The decision to initiate a probe signals an effort by the security agency to address concerns raised by members of the public and stakeholders in the justice sector while assessing whether disciplinary measures may be required.

The incident has once again placed the relationship between security agencies and civil rights advocates under the spotlight, with observers calling for greater adherence to due process and respect for the sanctity of court proceedings.

While the outcome of the investigation remains pending, the development is expected to shape discussions around accountability, professional conduct, and the role of security agencies within Nigeria’s justice system.
