Why I dumped my ‘bad boy’ image — Popular actor Jim Iyke

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 11, 2026 1371 Minutes read0

•Jim Iyke

Seasoned Nollywood actor James Ikechukwu Esomugha, professionally known as Jim Iyke, has revealed why he abandoned the “bad boy” image that defined the early years of his career, describing the decision as a deliberate step towards personal and professional growth.

In a recent interview with media personality Joey Akan, the actor said the controversial persona was largely shaped by external influences in the entertainment industry.

According to him, while the image served its purpose at a particular stage of his career, it eventually became restrictive as he matured and assumed greater responsibilities.

Iyke stressed that entertainers must recognise when a public image has outlived its relevance, warning that clinging to an outdated brand can shut the door to bigger opportunities and valuable relationships.

He noted that many entertainers remain stagnant because they fail to evolve or leave a phase of their careers at the appropriate time.

The actor maintained that reinvention is essential for sustained relevance and longevity in the entertainment industry.

Reflecting on his own journey, Iyke said he made a conscious decision to shed the “bad boy” label after realising it no longer aligned with his personal values or career aspirations.

He said, “External forces play a great part in who you become in the entertainment industry.

“At every point in time, something is serviceable. We can all agree the ‘bad boy’ image was serviceable then. But then, as you advance in corporate life and meet people who truly matter, your ‘bad boy’ persona is anathema to the way they live.

“Not knowing when to exit the stage is a problem a lot of us are having in entertainment. Let’s just say I knew when to exit.

“The ‘bad boy’ image served its purpose, but I had to ditch it when it was no longer serviceable to move forward in life.”
