Kano State branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has raised the alarm over incidents of assaults on medical doctors by relatives of patients in hospitals in the state.

The branch Chairman, Abdullahi Kabir Sulaiman stated this during an unscheduled visit to the Commissioner of Police, Kano State, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, reports Daily Sun.

In his remarks at the visit, he stated that, “The visit was prompted by the recent incidents within a couple of two weeks at Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital, Kano and at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano respectively where at the separate incidents, a medical doctor was assaulted by patient’s relatives”.

The chairman, who did not provide details of the assaults, stated that they were at the Command to acknowledge the prompt response of the police in the matter and to salute the police for the support they extended to them, which led to promptly addressing the situation.

Although normalcy had since returned after the assaults, the chairman explained that they were in his office, “To seek the diligent prosecution of the assailant that attacked another member at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and to bring forth ideas that will put a stop to the increasing cases of assault on medical doctors in the state”.

Kabir lauded the professional manner in which the cases were being handled and implored them to stand by them to ensure that justice was served at the end, adding that the deterrent would avert future occurrences of assault.

He equally emphasized the need for greater security and protection for healthcare professionals in the state adding that this would go a long way to adding value to the manner in which they discharge their duties.

In his response, the Police boss described the NMA as a crucial partner of the police while assuring them of their determination to create a safer working environment for all healthcare providers in the state.
