After Senate’s rejection, South-East caucus urges Tinubu to immortalise late Humphrey Nwosu

•Late Professor Humphrey Nwosu

The South-East Caucus of the Senate has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to honor Professor Humphrey Nwosu by immortalising him for his pivotal role in ensuring that the historic June 12, 1993, presidential elections held and also put the elections in the consciousness of Nigerians.

Expressing disappointment after the upper chamber rejected their motion twice, the South-East lawmakers, who had earlier walked out of the chamber, told Senate correspondents in a separate briefing that President Tinubu has always been recognised as a ‘June 12 warrior’, making it fitting for his administration to acknowledge Prof. Nwosu’s legacy.

South-East Senate caucus addressed Senate correspondents today, Thursday, March 27, 2025.

The lawmakers said that in spite of the rejection of the first two prayers, the caucus remained undeterred, arguing that Prof. Nwosu’s recognition may be delayed but not denied, reports Channels TV.

According to the Chairman of the South-East caucus, Senator Abaribe, “If there was no election, there would have been no June 12.

He added that, “It was Professor Humphrey Nwosu’s determination and courage that ensured that election was held, even in the face of military pressure”.

Led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the caucus had proposed three key prayers which include naming the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters after Nwosu in recognition of his foundational role in its development.

Others are posthumously awarding him a national honour for his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution and observing a one-minute silence in his honor, which the Senate granted.

Others were however not granted by the upper chamber.
