Alleged defamation: Facebook user apologises to Nathaniel Bassey, Mercy Chinwo

•Kingsley Ibe

In a recent development regarding a defamation and cyberstalking petition filed against four Facebook users by gospel artist Nathaniel Bassey, one of the accused, Kingsley Ibe, has publicly apologised to both Bassey and fellow gospel singer Mercy Chinwo.

This apology follows allegations made by Ibe and others suggesting that Bassey fathered the child of another popular gospel singer, which circulated widely on social media, reports Nigerian Tribune.

In a press statement released by Bassey’s legal representatives yesterday, it was revealed that Ibe has turned himself into police custody and provided a statement along with evidence for prosecution on charges of criminal defamation and cyber-related offences.

The statement further conveyed Ibe’s remorse for his actions and his commitment to rectifying the situation.

Additionally, Ibe’s family, including his aged mother, issued apologies on his behalf.

In a video apology released by Ibe yesterday, he expressed regret for his “reckless” statement and clarified that he was not under duress to make the video.

“To you Pastor Nathaniel Bassey, I express my sincere apology to you for the comment I made on social media and to your family as well.”

”I know the damages it has caused and I take full responsibility and I am deeply sorry from the bottom of my heart,” he said

”To his fans and followers, to his ministry, the Hallelujah Challenge and the RCCG Oasis.

”I am also a fan of Pastor Nathaniel Bassey for the past years and I did not make those comments with the intent to cause harm or evil and I am deeply deeply sorry.”

He also apologised to gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo and her family adding that his utterances might have far-reaching implications but were not with any form of malice

”To Minister Chinwo, I know I don’t deserve your mercy but I am deeply sorry and I ask you to forgive me. ”
