Angry mob beat suspected armed robber to death in Lagos

•Lagos Police PRO, Benjamin Hundeyin

A suspected armed robber noted for robbing people of their belongings especially, handsets met his waterloo at the weekend, when angry mob descended on him, beating him to death.

It was gathered that on the day of the incident, the suspect identified as Saidu Sinah a.k.a Ojubitin and his gang allegedly attacked commuters with dangerous weapons, including dagger, and snatched a few phones from them before some commuters mustered courage and charged towards one of them, reports The Guardian.

Spokesperson for Lagos State Police Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident yesterday, said it happened at about 6:30a.m, on Friday near AP filling station junction in Agege area of the state.

According to him, when the news of a suspected armed robber being beaten, got to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Isokoko, the officer mobilised his team to the scene only to behold a man severely beaten, lying helpless on the ground, while his attackers fled on sighting the police.

He added that the police evacuated him to a nearby medical centre where he later gave up the ghost as a result of the severity of the beating and injuries sustained.

“Before the incident, the deceased and his gang had stabbed a middle-aged woman on that spot and collected her phones and some unspecified amount of money.

“The woman was in the hospital receiving treatment, the same hospital the deceased was taken to before his death.

“The DPO and his team visited the woman in her hospital bed, and used the opportunity to inspect and photograph the deceased.

“The corpse has been evacuated to the public mortuary by the Lagos State health and monitoring unit.

“Meanwhile, efforts are on to apprehend fleeing members of the gang,” Hundeyin said.
