Another fire at Lagos international airport averted as electric spark disrupts operations •Terminal shutdown

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 1, 2026 1180 Minutes read0

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says the temporary Terminal 3 (T3) of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport was briefly shut down today following an electrical spark.

In a statement, FAAN said the spark occurred in an operational office, resulting in smoke emission at about 14:05 hours.

The agency noted that electrical maintenance is ongoing to ensure all systems function optimally ahead of the terminal’s reopening. It added that all flights operating from Terminal 3 have been diverted to Terminal 2, reports Channels TV.

FAAN assured that the situation is under control, as personnel of the Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) promptly responded and contained the incident.

The development comes barely one month after a fire outbreak at the same airport disrupted parts of operations in February.

Speaking on the earlier incident, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, said preliminary investigations indicated that the fire may have started from the ground floor of Terminal 1, where offices and a restaurant are located, before spreading to the roof.

She disclosed that some people were injured but reiterated that no fatalities were recorded.
