The management of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has suspended all academic activities at its School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing indefinitely following the death of a student.
The suspension was announced in a notice issued yesterday and signed by the Coordinator of Programme and Head of School, Dr Taiwo Omirin, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director, reports The Nation.
According to the notice, the directive affects students in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sets, including master’s student nurses and those undergoing orientation.
The management also directed students residing in the hostel to vacate the facility immediately.
It said the decision followed the death of Student Nurse Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo, an incident that reportedly triggered unrest within the hospital community.
The management did not specify when academic activities would resume, describing the suspension as indefinite.
“This decision follows the unfortunate demise of Student Nurse Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo, which has reportedly resulted in student unrest within the hospital community.”
The hospital said the suspension was to provide a peaceful and conducive environment for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
It urged affected students and stakeholders to remain calm and strictly comply with the directive pending further communication, while regretting any inconvenience caused.
Recall that Taiwo, a Post Basic nursing student who was said to be asthmatic, died at the institution under controversial circumstances, sparking protests among fellow students who alleged negligence in handling his emergency.
