•INEC election

The Benue State Independent Electoral Commission has fixed local government elections in the state for July 6, 2024.

The commission’s chairman, John Chen, stated this today when he met with stakeholders where he unveiled the election timetable in Makurdi, the state capital, reports The PUNCH.

He assured all that the commission would conduct free, fair, and credible elections.

Chen said the commission would not organise sham elections just as he said that the dangers of such transcends enthronement of people of dubious acceptability into leadership positions, ultimately leading to dismal performance in governance.

In line with the timetable made available by the commission, “the local government election in the state will now hold on July 6, 2024.”

He said, “Alongside the election timetable, BSIEC is proud to announce its intention for the creation of additional council wards within Benue State.

“Today’s gathering marks a significant step towards fulfilling that promise. We are here to unveil the official election timetable and schedule of activities for the upcoming LG elections in Benue State. This comprehensive document outlines the critical milestones BSIEC will undertake to ensure a free and fair electoral process.

“BSIEC recognises the vital role each stakeholder plays in ensuring successful elections. These stakeholders include political parties, civil society organisations, the media, and, of course, our esteemed security agencies, that is why you are all invited to witness this momentous occasion.

“We welcome your active participation, constructive criticism, and unwavering commitment to partnering with the Commission in the delivery of a very transparent electoral process for the people of Benue state deserve nothing less.

“I therefore urge each and every one of you here today to embrace the spirit of collaboration and upholding the highest standards of discipline as we work towards the upcoming elections. Let us work together to ensure that the upcoming elections are a testament to Benue’s democratic spirit.”
