BREAKING: House of Reps announces date to vote on constitution amendment bills

The FrontierThe FrontierDecember 2, 2025 2820 Minutes read0

•House of Representatives

The House of Representatives will on December 10 and 11 vote on the items in the ongoing review of the 1999 constitution.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu announced this to members at the plenary today.

Kalu, who is also the chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, equally informed members that debate on the constitutional amendment bills will be held tomorrow and Thursday this week ahead of voting scheduled for next week, reports Daily Trust.

Kalu had earlier informed the House that the committee had already completed the technical work required for this stage of the review, and the committee is now preparing the final set of harmonised documents to be laid before members for consideration.

A total of 87 bills seeking to alter the 1999 Constitution are under consideration. They cover electoral reforms, judicial reforms, state police, and fiscal changes.

More specifically, the proposals seek to create additional seats for women, new states and local governments, establish state police, and grant full autonomy to local government councils, among several others.
