•A fuel tanker explosion
The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed that three people died following a petrol tanker explosion at Kura Market Junction along Zaria Road in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.
Spokesperson of the Service, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said the Emergency Response Unit received a distress call from a retired Civil Defence officer, Danlami Muhammad, reporting that a tanker had fallen and burst into flames.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the tanker, which was conveying about 30,000 litres of petrol, had crashed and ignited.
The truck reportedly struck a cyclist, who narrowly escaped with his life.
According to Abdullahi, four persons were involved in the incident, but three victims were found unconscious and later confirmed dead, while the cyclist survived the explosion.
In a separate incident, the Fire Service also responded to a fire outbreak on Maiduguri Road in Tarauni Local Government Area.
Abdullahi said firefighters arrived to find the upper floor of a two-storey commercial building, measuring about 200 by 200 feet, engulfed in flames.
Three shops were completely destroyed, while two others were partially affected. Firefighters were able to save the remaining shops on both the first and ground floors.
The Director of the Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, appealed to residents to exercise caution, especially during the harmattan season, when fire incidents are more frequent.
He also urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
