BRT driver flees after hitting mother, 2 sons in Lagos

•Commuters queue to board the BRT buses

A driver of Bus Rapid Transit also known as BRT, identified as Sunday Bukola allegedly ran over a 35-year-old woman, Rofiat and her two sons at the Palmgroove area of Lagos at the weekend.

The driver reportedly took to his heel after the incident for fear of being lynched by an angry mob that had gathered around the area, reports Daily Trust.

It was learnt that while Rofiat and one of her sons identified as Basit survived, her five-year-old son, Malik, died on the spot.

Both Rofiat and Basit are currently being treated at the intensive care unit of an undisclosed hospital in Lagos.

Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, who confirmed the incident, said the victims were knocked down by an unregistered BRT bus.

Hundeyin said preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were crossing the BRT lane at Palmgroove inward Onipanu when the incident occurred.

He said, “35-year-old Rofiat and her two sons, Malik, 5, and Basit, 2, were crossing the BRT lane. Unfortunately, Malik died on the spot, but Rofiat and Basit were rushed to the hospital.

“The corpse of Malik has been deposited at the mortuary. The driver was later arrested and he is now in police custody.”
