Celtic sack manager Nancy after six defeats in eight games

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 5, 2026 1131 Minutes read0

•Sacked Celtic Manager, Wilfred Nancy

Celtic have parted company with manager Wilfried Nancy following a disastrous run of form that saw Saturday’s 3-1 defeat by Rangers mark his sixth loss in just eight games in charge.

According to BBC Sport today, the 48-year-old signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Scottish champions after concluding the Major League Soccer season with Columbus Crew and officially took charge on December 4.

However, the team’s form quickly slumped after a strong spell under interim manager Martin O’Neill, who had won seven of his eight games in charge.

Nancy became the first Celtic manager to lose his opening two matches and suffered further setbacks with a 3-1 defeat to St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup final and a 2-1 loss at Dundee United.

This sequence of results marked the first time Celtic had lost four consecutive games since a similar run under the legendary Jock Stein in 1978.

The team briefly recovered with back-to-back league wins against Aberdeen and Livingston, but defeats at Motherwell and a second-half collapse at home to Rangers sealed Nancy’s fate.

In addition to Nancy’s departure, Celtic have also removed Paul Tisdale from his role as head of football operations. Tisdale, formerly manager of Exeter City and Stevenage, had held the position since October 2024.

Nancy had previously managed MLS sides Montreal and Columbus, leading Columbus to the MLS Cup in 2023 and the Leagues Cup while finishing second in the league.

He was named MLS Manager of the Year for 2024, though his side slipped to seventh in the Eastern Conference and 12th overall last season.

As he leaves Celtic, Nancy departs with just five wins in his latest 20 games as a coach, leaving the Scottish champions searching for a new managerial direction.
