Chaotic policy: Tinubu suspends airports authority’s cashless policy

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 5, 2026 730 Minutes read0

President Bola Tinubu has approved the suspension of the cashless toll payment system introduced by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at major airports across the country.

On March 1, 2026, the airport authority barred cash payments at toll gates, requiring motorists to use prepaid access cards or electronic payment channels, reports Daily Trust.

However, the situation got rowdy with passengers and motorists stranded for hours as confusion and heavy gridlock trailed the commencement of the exercise.

The development led to frustration from travellers who complained of missed flights and delayed pickups.

However, addressing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council, FEC meeting yesterday, the Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said the President has agreed for the suspension of the policy.

He said the president was worried about the sufferings Nigerians were going through and has asked the Ministry to go back to the drawing board and restrategise on the policy.

He also said those that had bought cards can continue to use them, also with cash until the ministry and the relevant agencies will come out with the way forward.
