•Cholera outbreak

The Ogun State Government has confirmed the outbreak of cholera which has claimed the life of a 62-year-old woman with five persons hospitalised.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, said the incident happened in Ijebu Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area. The incident occurred four days ago.

A source in the community said the deceased woman contracted cholera while caring for her infected child, who is now among the hospitalised victims, reports Channels TV.

In a press statement yesterday, the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Ogun State, Kunle Ashimi, acknowledged the widespread impact of cholera, affecting 30 states across the country, including Ogun.

He expressed condolences for the victims, stating, “As of today, cholera has been reported in 30 states, including Ogun State, with at least 30 deaths nationwide. We pray for the souls of the departed”.

Ashimi also confirmed that the NMA is on high alert and that the government has provided a contact number for reporting new cases.

This is as the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Kemi Ogunyemi, said that the number of recorded fatalities, as a result of the Cholera outbreak in the state, has risen to 21 following the last update which reported 350 suspected cases and 15 fatalities.
