The Nigeria Police Force in Delta State has intensified intelligence-led operations targeting drug dens, blackspots, and criminal hideouts across the state, amid rising concerns over substance abuse, particularly among youths.
The Command said the move is part of sustained efforts to dismantle drug networks, prevent avoidable deaths, and curb crimes linked to substance abuse, including cultism and violence, reports Channels TV.
It noted that the action became necessary due to recurring drug-related incidents reported in various parts of the state, many involving young people.
The crackdown follows the death of a 15-year-old boy, Gift Oberhirhi, in Orogun, after allegedly abusing a controlled drug.
According to the police, “a 15-year-old boy… allegedly abused Dexamethasone tablets provided by his friend… the deceased, without a doctor’s prescription, took the drug from the suspect and swallowed fifteen tablets.”
The Command added that the teenager “subsequently fell ill and died while being taken for medical attention.”
Police further disclosed that “operatives promptly responded to the report, visited the scene, and evacuated the body to the General Hospital Mortuary, Orogun, for autopsy,” adding that “the suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody, while the matter will be thoroughly investigated.”
The Command described the incident as a grim reminder of the dangers of drug misuse, stressing that “this incident reflects the serious public safety risks posed by the illegal distribution and misuse of drugs, hard drugs, controlled drugs and other substances, particularly among vulnerable groups.”
It added that the development “underscores the urgency of ongoing enforcement actions aimed at disrupting the activities of those engaged in the unlawful sale and distribution of drugs.”
Reaffirming the Command’s position, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi John Oyeniyi, said the police remain resolute in tackling drug-related crimes, assuring that “all necessary measures will be taken to address drug-related crimes across the state.”
He also called on residents to support law enforcement efforts, urging members of the public to “remain vigilant, and report drug sale or use and other suspicious activities to the nearest police station for necessary action.”
