Don canvasses autonomy for Nigerian varsities

A university lecturer from Usmanu Danfodio University Sokoto, Professor Bello Malami, has asked President Tinubu to redouble efforts in the fight against corruption in Nigeria which he described as the base for progress, development and solutions to prevailing insecurity in the country.

While expressing optimism that the economy would pick up if the government deploys youths in agriculture which he said is the fastest tool that can grow the economy and wind down inflation, saying a country that imports virtually everything is exposed to shattered economy, reports Daily Independent.

He added that Tinubu inherited multi dimensional problems from the previous government among which is pervasive corruption in higher places but the machinery he has put in motion to recover looted public funds starting from the Apex bank by arresting and currently prosecuting the immediate past CBN governor is a step in the right direction, alleging that most financial corruptions might have emanated from the apex bank.

The former vice chancellor, Kebbi State University of Science and Technology hinted that the security situation in the country is summountable as Usmanu Danfodio University ,Sokoto is planning a conference on security under aegis of center for agricultural research and pastoralists and center for peace studies would brain storm on the issue of farmer/herders clashes with has blown into full insecurity at the conference he said roots causes of the problems will be discussed and solutions will be proffered because they are experts under grassland.

Speaking on IPPIS, the professor commended the president for exiting universities from it, saying such a scheme stagnates education because the demands of education are too many to be accommodated therefore it is a hindrance to education development.

“What we are urging the president to do now is to give Nigerian universities full financial autonomy so as to allow for discipline and ability to improve manpower which is grossly lacking in public universities in the country.

“While hoping that our refineries would pick up as pledged particularly the Port Harcourt and Dangote, Nigerians will witness sharp drop from the prices of petrol from N650 to N300 or N350,” he said.
