Ekiti, other Southwest states to strengthen security

The FrontierThe FrontierSeptember 5, 2024 2311 Minutes read0

•Ekiti State governor, Biodun Oyebanji

The Special Adviser to the Ekiti State Governor on Security Matters, Brig. Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana (Rtd.), has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with other Southwest states to enhance security.

Ogundana, speaking in Ado Ekiti today, highlighted the importance of the maiden meeting of special advisers on security from Ekiti, Ondo, Kogi, Kwara, and Osun states, reports The PUNCH.

The initiative aims to strengthen the security architecture of these boundary-sharing states and ensure the protection of lives and property.

In attendance at the meeting were Ogundana; Senior Special Assistant on Security, Ondo State, Mr Olugbenga Atiba; Commander Jerry Omodara (Kogi State); Brigadier Samuel Ojo (Rtd.) (Osun State); and Brigadier General S.T. Bello (Kwara State), with Dr Adetunberu Oludotun, Director General of Homeland Security, Ekiti State, serving as Secretary.

Ogundana explained that the meeting was convened at the directive of Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, in response to rising cross-border insecurity. He emphasised the necessity of collaboration, particularly in tackling inter-border crimes, where criminals evade prosecution by crossing state lines.

He said, “The inaugural meeting marks the beginning of significant collaboration among the states. Future meetings will involve local governments in border areas to enhance cooperation among security personnel.”

“We are committed to ensuring peace across Ekiti State and our neighbouring states. An improved security climate is vital for attracting investment, particularly in agriculture. Without adequate security, investment will be hindered, and we have seen major agro investors showing interest in Ekiti,” Ogundana added.

He also highlighted efforts to enhance security in farm settlements to encourage farmers to resume their activities without fear, as part of the government’s commitment to improving food security.

Ogundana expressed optimism that the recent food insecurity challenges would not recur, thanks to proactive measures, including resolving disputes between herdsmen and farmers.

The security adviser urged residents to go about their daily activities without fear of kidnappings, reiterating the government’s dedication to safeguarding lives, property, and providing a conducive environment for investors.

The meeting will continue periodically, with further discussions held virtually as needed to stay ahead of potential security threats.
