•Fire outbreak
The popular Kara Market in Ajase-Ipo town, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, was hit by a fire outbreak in the early hours of today, leaving 28 shops in ruins.
Reports indicate that the fire started around 1:35 a.m. and destroyed 22 plank shops and six container shops before it was extinguished by the Kwara State Fire Service, reports Nigerian Tribune.
The market has a total of 323 shops, including 22 plank shops and seven kiosks.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said the fire was caused by the negligence of one of the shop owners, who allegedly cooked late at night but failed to properly put out the fire.
“The fire later reignited and spread to other shops because the area had many wooden structures. Firefighters arrived on time to stop the fire from spreading to the rest of the market, saving many other shops and goods from being destroyed. The quick action of our men prevented a bigger disaster,” Adekunle said.
He urged traders to be cautious with fire, especially in markets where highly flammable items are stored.
Adekunle also advised shop owners to always ensure fires are completely extinguished after use and to prioritise safety measures.
