Former Police IG Adamu dumps APC for SDP in race for governor

The FrontierThe FrontierMay 26, 2026 742 Minutes read0

•Former Inspector General of Police, Mohamed Abubakar Adamu

Former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, has resigned from the APC and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

He participated in the May 21 APC governorship primaries in Nasarawa State and scored 39,675 votes as against Senator Aliyu Ahmed Wadada, who emerged winner of the exercise with 195,285 votes, reports The Nation.

According to a statement signed by the Chairman of the Contact and Mobilisation Committee, Nathaniel Isa, Adamu joined the SDP to pick the governorship ticket of the party to participate in the 2027 governorship election in the State.

“After wide-ranging consultations with stakeholders, delegates, supporters, and committed party members across Nasarawa State, Adamu Mohammed and his political movement have officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and formally joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

“This decision follows the disgraceful charade that masqueraded as the APC Governorship Primary Election held on May 21, 2026.

“Authentic results independently collated from wards and local government areas across the state clearly confirmed that Rtd. IGP Adamu Mohammed secured a decisive victory before desperate political merchants hijacked the process, mutilated the mandate of delegates, and forcefully announced a prearranged outcome.

“What happened was not a primary election; it was a coordinated assault on democracy. The APC leadership abandoned every principle of fairness and openly supervised the rape of internal democracy in pursuit of selfish political interests.

“The voices of thousands of party members were brutally silenced so that a tiny cabal could satisfy its greed and maintain control over the state’s political structure.

“The APC has now exposed itself as a platform where loyalty is punished, credibility is destroyed, and fraud is rewarded.

“A party that treats the mandate of its members as disposable tissue paper has lost every moral claim to public trust.

“No responsible political movement can continue to operate under a structure controlled by political profiteers, manipulators, and enemies of democratic values.

“For months, supporters of Rtd. IGP Adamu Mohammed invested their time, resources, and energy believing that democratic participation within the APC would count for something.

“Instead, they were met with betrayal, intimidation, and a shameless conspiracy against the will of the people.

“The events of May 21 exposed a dangerous culture of impunity that threatens the democratic future of Nasarawa State if left unchallenged.

“The SDP now stands as the credible platform for liberation, justice, accountability, and people-centered leadership.

“Rtd. IGP Adamu Mohammed, alongside his political structure and thousands of supporters spread across the state, is entering the SDP with a clear mission: to dismantle the politics of imposition, rescue Nasarawa State from political oppression, and return power to the people ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

“We commend the courage, patience, and unwavering determination of our supporters who refused to bow to intimidation or surrender to electoral robbery.

“This movement is no longer just a political project; it is now a resistance against political tyranny, impunity, and the continued destruction of democratic values in Nasarawa State.

“The struggle has entered a new phase. Under the banner of the SDP, the people of Nasarawa State will resist manipulation, reject imposed leadership, and reclaim their stolen mandate through the power of the ballot,” the statement concluded.
