•INEC Chairman Amupitan (L) and former Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen
The leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is currently meeting with the African Union election monitoring delegation, led by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting is essentially to discuss INEC’s preparations for the election, especially in areas such as the application of technology, logistics arrangements, as well as security, reports Channels TV.
Leader of the delegation said they hope to hear from the Commission lessons it has learnt from the 2023 general election, and strategies in place to ensure that the gains of that election are consolidated, and mistakes are not repeated in 2027.
Other areas of interest to the delegation also include results management, arrangements in place for inclusivity, and how to gain the trust of the electorate.
National Commissioner, Professor Rhoda Gumus, is representing the INEC chairman at the meeting.
