•Tinubu arrives Lagos from Europe
There is currently heavy traffic on Lagos roads following the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from Europe after the end of his vacation.
Tinubu returned to Nigeria this evening after spending one full month in Europe.
Meanwhile, following his arrival, some major roads in Lagos have been blocked by security operatives.
The Frontier reports that the Mainland part of Lagos is relatively free compared to the Island which is completely on standstill as the president’s motorcade moves to his Bourdillon residence in Ikoyi.
A resident, John Kunle who is in the traffic jam on the Island said, “I left my office since 5pm, up till this very moment (7.26pm), we are still stuck in Go-slow because of Tinubu’s arrival in Lagos from Europe. This is a very sad situation. How does the president feel subjecting his citizens to this stress just because he is passing on the road?”
A banker, Victoria Chisom (not real names) in a chat with The Frontier said, “I forgot that Tinubu was scheduled to land in Lagos this evening, otherwise I would’ve remained in my house. The Island part where we are now is completely blocked. Perhaps I will get home by midnight. I have already informed my family of the gridlock”.
President Tinubu departed Nigeria on August 30 for a three-week vacation in Europe.
However, at the end of the three weeks, he failed to return home, fueling speculations.
Amid the pressure from the opposition regarding the whereabouts of the president, Bayo Onanuga, Presidential spokesman, announced that the President had extended his vacation “by a few days”.
There were reports that he would return to the country by weekend, but the president still did not return.
The African Action Congress (AAC) had filed a suit to challenge the lack of transfer of power to Vice President Kashim Shettima, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) demanded information on the absence of the president.
Onanuga had maintained that Tinubu was hale and hearty, saying he could govern the country from anywhere in this era of globalisation.
Earlier today, the presidential spokesman said the European vacation had ended and the President was on his way back to Nigeria.
“President Tinubu’s aircraft is expected to touch down at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, later this evening,” Onanuga had said
He said Tinubu chose to fly to Lagos first to honour the memory of Chief MKO Abiola, “the martyr of Nigeria’s democratic struggle”.
The presidential plane landed at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 6pm.
