I would be unemployed without music, says Afrobeats singer Ayra Starr

Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has revealed that she would likely be unemployed if she had not found success in the entertainment industry, crediting her music career with changing the direction of her life.

Speaking in a recent chat with EE72, the singer reflected on her rise to fame, her journey with Mavin Records, and the realities of life in the spotlight.

“If I were not doing music, I would literally be unemployed. I do not even think I would be a content creator. That would be a lot of work. I would just be vibing in my mother’s house, eating my mother’s food,” she said.

The 24-year-old also recalled how excited she was when she learned that Don Jazzy and the Mavin team had been listening to her music before she was signed.

“I was so excited when I found out they were listening to my music. You know who it is,” she said.

Ayra Starr also admitted that fame comes with challenges, revealing that she sometimes wishes the public knew less about her because she tends to speak freely in interviews.

“I really wish people knew less about me. Once the camera comes on, I cannot stop talking. And I feel like I overshare,” she added.

Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, Ayra Starr joined Mavin Records in 2020 after being discovered by Don Jazzy through social media.

Since then, she has grown into one of Nigeria’s biggest music exports, releasing projects including “19 & Dangerous” and “The Year I Turned 21,” while earning multiple awards, nominations and international recognition.
