Imo police boss deploys officers for peaceful workers protest

The Imo State Police Commissioner, Aboki Danjuma, has deplored officers and men of the command across the state to prevent the Nigeria Labour Congress protest from being hijacked by hoodlums.

The NLC and affiliate union members had announced planned protest over economic hardships nationwide.

The command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, disclosed in a brief statement today in Owerri, the state capital, that the essence of the deployment of the cops was to ensure that the peaceful protest is not hijacked by criminals.

He said that the police were ready to forestall any breakdown of the law and order and deal ruthlessly with the bad elements.

Okoye wrote, “Massive deployment of security operatives across the state to ensure that the ongoing NLC peaceful protest is not hijacked by criminally minded elements.

“The command remains committed to providing maximum security for all and sundry in the State while upholding the rule of law and respecting the rights of citizens.”

Members of the NLC have stormed the streets of Lagos State to express their grievances over the current economic hardship.

They are also protesting the government’s alleged failure to implement agreements reached between both parties on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

The decision followed the conclusion of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the federal government to implement measures against the widespread hardship.
