IPOB raises concerns over Nnamdi Kanu conviction, says appeal has wider legal implications

The FrontierThe FrontierJune 5, 2026 851 Minutes read0

•Embattled IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has renewed its campaign over the conviction of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, saying the appeal filed against the judgment raises broader legal and constitutional issues.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group argued that the appeal before the Court of Appeal goes beyond Kanu’s case and touches on questions relating to due process, jurisdiction and the administration of justice.

IPOB drew attention to the federal government’s cross-appeal challenging aspects of the judgment delivered by Justice James Omotosho in November 2025, reports Vanguard.

According to the group, issues raised in both the appeal and cross-appeal warrant careful judicial consideration and provide an opportunity for the appellate court to address questions relating to the interpretation and application of the law.

“The issues before the Court of Appeal extend beyond one individual and concern the principles that guide criminal proceedings and constitutional safeguards,” the statement said.

IPOB stated that its appeal raises matters relating to fair hearing, jurisdiction and other procedural issues which, in its view, should be examined by the appellate court.

The group further argued that the outcome of the appeal could have implications for future interpretations of constitutional rights and criminal procedure.

It therefore called on legal practitioners, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to follow the proceedings closely, while emphasizing the importance of transparency and adherence to legal processes.

The Court of Appeal is expected to consider both the appeal and the cross-appeal in a case that has attracted significant public attention.

Kanu was convicted by the Federal High Court, Abuja, in November 2025 on charges brought against him by the Federal Government. His legal team subsequently filed an appeal challenging the judgment, while the Federal Government also filed a cross-appeal on certain aspects of the decision.

The appellate court is expected to determine the issues raised by the parties in accordance with the law.
