JUST IN: Manchester United sack head coach Ruben Amorim with immediate effect

Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim, the club confirmed in a dramatic decision today, Monday, 5 January 2026, a club statement revealed.

The Portuguese coach, who only joined the Red Devils in November 2024, has been relieved of his duties amid growing dissatisfaction with the team’s performances and recent comments that exposed internal tensions at Old Trafford, reports AFP.

Amorim’s tenure saw the club sitting sixth in the Premier League table at the time of his dismissal, with reports confirming his departure came less than 24 hours after he publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy during a press conference following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United.

Sources say the club’s leadership acted swiftly after the controversial interview in which Amorim made pointed remarks about his role and authority, amplifying pressure on the Portuguese boss less than two seasons into his reign.

At this stage, Manchester United are expected to name an interim manager while preparations begin for identifying a permanent replacement.

More details are expected to emerge as the club prepares for its next fixtures.

A release later on the club website noted that former club star, Darren Fletcher will take over the team’s next game against Burnley.

He said, “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.

“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.

“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.

“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
