Kenya police fire rubber bullets at youths protesting tax hikes

•Kenya protesters react as a tear gas canister is lobbed by Kenyan security forces

Kenyan police fired rubber bullets to disperse young protesters in the capital Nairobi today.

Our correspondent saw escalating tensions as demonstrators rallied across the country against the government’s proposed tax hikes, reports AFP.

“Get the rubber bullets from the box,” a police officer told his colleagues, according to our correspondent who overheard the conversation before they started firing in the air and at the protesters.

The mainly Gen-Z-led rallies, which began last week, have taken President William Ruto’s government by surprise, with the Kenyan leader saying over the weekend that he was ready to speak to the protesters.
