Lagos health agency to stop quacks through QR codes

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 4, 2025 1421 Minutes read0

•Dr. Abiola Idowu

Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency has launched the pilot of its QR Code Sticker Initiative in public and private health facilities to allow healthcare seekers to access registered health facilities in Lagos simply by scanning a QR code with a smartphone.

According to Dr. Abiola Idowu, permanent secretary, the innovation provides access to the facility’s name, address, registration number, contact details, category and scope of accredited services, reports The Nation.

Also accessible are the facility’s licence renewal status, operating hours, contact person, service ratings, and a feedback feature for patients. “By digitising and publicly displaying these details, HEFAMAA aims to curb quackery and unethical practice, especially among unaccredited private facilities operating outside their approved limits,” Dr. Idowu said.

She added that the system empowers patients to make informed choices about where they receive care, while also providing a direct feedback channel to the agency to report substandard services. Dr. Idowu described the initiative as a “game-changer” in the quest to ensure that only competent and ethical healthcare providers operate in the state.

“We are reinforcing our zero-tolerance policy on quackery. This aligns with our core mandate to monitor and accredit all public and private health facilities in Lagos,” she said. Urging residents to always verify health facilities before seeking care, she assured the public of the agency’s commitment to deploying innovative digital tools and strengthening regulatory oversight for improved healthcare delivery.

The QR Code Sticker Initiative is a critical step in safeguarding public health and restoring confidence in the state’s healthcare system.
