NAFDAC uncovers expired condoms, fake drugs repackaged for sale in Lagos

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 21, 2025 2490 Minutes read0

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has made shocking discoveries during its ongoing enforcement operation at the Idumota open drug market in Lagos.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) yesterday, the agency revealed the seizure of unregistered narcotics, counterfeit GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) medicines and vaccines that were improperly stored—some even found hidden in toilets.

The statement read: “In the ongoing enforcement operation at the Idumota open drug market, NAFDAC has uncovered more alarming products, including unregistered narcotics, counterfeit GSK medicines, and vaccines stored in toilets.”

During a recent raid on Tuesday, officials also confiscated expired USAID-donated condoms that had been illegally repackaged and sold under the brand name “Kiss Condom.”

The agency further reported the seizure of banned drugs such as Analgin, improperly stored vaccines intended for cold-chain storage and Oxytocin—an essential maternal health drug—found outside the required temperature conditions.

NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying its crackdown on counterfeit and substandard medicines, highlighting the severe health risks posed by these dangerous products.
