The Kebbi State Caucus of the National Assembly yesterday demanded the arrest and prosecution of former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, SAN, accusing him of instigating unrest in the state.
At a press briefing in Abuja, Senator representing Kebbi Central, Adamu Aliero, who spoke on behalf of the Caucus, dismissed as “baseless and politically driven” a petition authored by Malami on September 10, 2025.
The petition had alleged that Governor Nasir Idris and some political actors were involved in the importation of thugs, foreign mercenaries, and illegal arms into the state, reports Saturday Independent.
Senator Aliero, joined by fellow Kebbi senators and members of the House of Representatives, reaffirmed their loyalty to Governor Idris, praising his ongoing efforts to safeguard law and order in the state.
“The petition by the former Attorney General is a clear attempt to malign Governor Nasir Idris and destabilise Kebbi,” Aliero stated. “Ironically, it was during Malami’s recent condolence visit to Birnin Kebbi that he paraded thugs from Sokoto, Koko, and Rara. These hired hands attacked the APC Secretariat, chanting ‘one term’ against the governor and provoking violent clashes with our supporters.”
Aliero stressed that Kebbi has long been known for its culture of peace and political tolerance, describing the incident as “alien to Kebbi politics.
“At no point has the Kebbi APC or the state government been linked to clandestine operations or terrorism, as mischievously claimed by Malami. His allegations are nothing more than a smear campaign and a reckless attempt to incite fear for political survival,” he added.
The Caucus further called on security agencies to compel Malami to provide evidence of his claims. “Security agencies should not waste time on partisan theatrics but remain focused on genuine threats. We stand behind our security operatives and urge them not to be distracted,” Aliero said.
Senator Garba Musa Maidoki, representing Kebbi South, echoed the call, noting that Malami’s residence is located less than 50 meters from the APC secretariat.
“If APC were violent, constant clashes would have occurred long ago. What happened that day was a deliberate provocation, styled like a campaign convoy despite INEC’s warning that campaigns are yet to begin,” he noted.
Challenging Malami to produce evidence of his allegations, Maidoki insisted that APC neither supports terrorism nor engages in violent politics.
He also lauded President Bola Tinubu’s strides in tackling insecurity.
“Before now, in my constituency, over 100 villages were deserted because of banditry. Today, by God’s grace, residents have returned. While challenges remain, progress has been made. We reject any insinuation linking us to banditry or terrorism,” Maidoki stressed.
The Kebbi Caucus pledged continued solidarity with Governor Idris and reiterated their commitment to peace, good governance, and democratic consolidation in the state.
