Nigerian Uber driver shot dead in US

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 21, 2025 2891 Minutes read0

A 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver, Olatunji W. Bolaji, was shot and killed while on duty in Philadelphia, United States.

His 22-year-old passenger was also critically injured in the attack, reports AFP.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Bolaji, who lived in Norristown, Pennsylvania, had just picked up the passenger outside Byblos Hookah Bar near Rittenhouse Square in Centre City.

Moments later, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee believed to have Massachusetts license plates pulled up behind Bolaji’s SUV.

Two men got out of the vehicle, and one of them opened fire.

Both Bolaji and the passenger were shot. Despite being hit in the head, Bolaji managed to drive a short distance before crashing into a pole at 17th and Chestnut Streets. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger suffered gunshot wounds to the arm, leg, and stomach. He was rushed to Jefferson University Hospital and is in critical condition.

Police say the shooting was captured on surveillance cameras. Investigators believe there may have been a physical altercation between the passenger and the attackers before the shooting. The motive is still unclear.

Uber expressed sadness over the incident. In a statement, the company said, “Our hearts break for the driver’s family and loved ones in the wake of this devastating loss. We’ve reached out to police to offer our support.”

Neighbours described Bolaji as a kind and hardworking man. A long-time family friend said he was always ready to help others, a loving partner, and a proud father. His son is a college graduate.

The family is devastated and is seeking justice. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover funeral and memorial expenses, as well as support the family with living and counselling costs during this difficult time.
