Nothing to celebrate: Reactions trail increment of NYSC monthly allowance to N77,000

•Youth Corps members

Nigerians have expressed mixed reactions to the increase in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) monthly allowance from N33,000 to N77,000.

The federal government yesterday officially raised the monthly allowance for Corps members, effective from July 2024, reports Nigerian Tribune.

This adjustment aligns with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which will substantially enhance the welfare package for corps members.

However, the new allowance for Nigerian youth corps members has continued to draw mixed reactions on social media, particularly on X.

Some netizens have argued that the increase is insignificant due to the rising cost of goods in the country, stating there is nothing to celebrate about the development.

On the other hand, others have praised the increment, claiming it will greatly benefit corps members.

Reacting to the news, an X user, @Abbamurtala15 tweeted, “This is nothing to celebrate, how many $$ is 77k, what can it buy?? It will not be enough for corpers to cater their monthly feeding alone, talk less of transport and other things.”

Another user, @AGINAS wrote, “It doesn’t make sense. I remember back then in 2014, my alawee was 19k. A bag of rice was around N4,500 to 5k and I was living a better life than those jubilating 70k today. Would that 70 get a bag of rice for them? NJ.”

“Before making this post try to relate the value of the then 33k and today’s 77k. I think there is nothing to celebrate here,” @balaraabe opined.

On the flip side, @baphacongo, who expressed excitement over the development, tweeted, “It is intriguing to hear that the federal government has approved giving Nysc members a monthly stipend of N77,000.”

Similarly, @WizzyProTec wrote, “A good development… because leaving it at 33k cannot be sustainable due to the increased prices of goods and services.”

“I’m sure this will bring much-needed relief and motivation to the corps members,” @altruist001 tweeted.
