Our structure intact without Governor Diri – PDP in Bayelsa

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 17, 2025 1532 Minutes read0

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Bayelsa State, has said despite the resignation of Governor Douye Diri, the party structures in the state remain solid and unified.

Governor Diri, who chaired the PDP zoning committee that allocated the party’s presidential ticket to the South, announced his exit from the PDP on Wednesday during an expanded State Executive Council meeting at the Government House in Yenagoa, ending weeks of speculation about his defection.

He said the decision followed “extensive consultations” with key stakeholders in the state, reports Daily Trust.

“After extensive consultation, today, the 15th of October 2025, I wish to formally notify you that I, Governor Douye Diri, do hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party,” he declared.

“I am not resigning alone. I am here with Mr Speaker, Deputy Speaker and all the members of our party in the Assembly who are with me on this. So today, I have formally resigned from the PDP for very obvious reasons.”

But speaking after an emergency meeting in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital, the party said it had formally accepted the resignation of the Governor with utmost respect, maintaining that its structures remain intact.

The PDP, however, reaffirmed its commitment to the party’s vision, goals, and objectives, assuring members of continued loyalty and dedication.

The State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ebiye Agu Ogoli, in a statement after the meeting, said that all party structures within the Bayelsa State chapter remain solid and unified.

He said: “The Bayelsa State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally accepted the resignation of the State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, from the party.

“At an emergency meeting held on Wednesday evening in Yenagoa, the state capital, party officials confirmed the receipt of the governor’s resignation letter with the utmost respect. The letter was addressed to the Kolokuma/Opokuma Ward 6 chairman and copied the State Working Committee (SWC).

“The party leadership expressed sincere gratitude for Governor Diri’s exemplary leadership and the positive rapport he maintained with stakeholders and party members throughout his tenure as a PDP member prior to his resignation.

“While recognising the governor’s decision, the PDP reaffirmed its commitment to the party’s vision, goals, and objectives, assuring members of continued loyalty and dedication. They emphasized that all party structures within the Bayelsa State chapter remain solid and unified.

“The party also extended their best wishes to Governor Diri, praying for success in his future pursuits.”

The State Working Committee emergency meeting was attended by the Chairman, Hon. Solomon Agwana; Deputy Chairman, Hon. Ben George Odon; State Secretary, Hon. Gesiye Isowo; State Treasurer, Elder Luke Demeoru; State Vice Chairman Central, Chief Wisdom Nathan.

Others were, Hon. Indutimi Opurubelebo, State Organizing Secretary; Hon. Ebiye Agu Ogoli, State Publicity Secretary; Hon. Christie Ebbeli, State Woman Leader; Barr. Christopher Kainga, State Legal Adviser; Barr. Obed Newman Andi, State Vice Chairman East; Hon. Tobi Ebikidoumene, State Vice Chairman West; Chief Amalala Atua, State Financial Secretary; Hon. Oyisor Didi, State Youth Leader; and Elder Akwakwa B. Akwakwa, State Auditor.
