Protest over Poly Ibadan renaming: Oyo govt meets student leaders behind closed doors

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 1, 2025 1610 Minutes read0

Oyo State Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal is currently meeting behind closed doors with the leadership of the student union of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, following a protest over the recent renaming of the institution by Governor Seyi Makinde.

The meeting, taking place at the Conference Room of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), was convened by the state government in response to today’s protest, which disrupted academic and administrative activities on campus, reports The Nation.

Also in attendance are key government officials, including the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya (rtd); Commissioner for Education, Prof. Soliu Abdulwaheed Adelabu; Chairman of the Oyo State Youth Development Agency, Prince Falana Adebowale; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Victor Olojede.

The protest saw students locking the institution’s main gates and demanding a reversal of the name change, describing it as insensitive and poorly communicated.

As the dialogue continues, it remains uncertain whether a resolution will be reached immediately, especially as Governor Makinde is currently out of the state on official duties.
