Six ways to gain admission into Nigerian universities without JAMB in 2026

Getting admission into a Nigerian university without writing JAMB UTME is possible in 2026 through several approved alternatives.

These routes are legal, recognised by many universities, and in some cases can even help students gain admission directly into 200 level, reports The Nation.

Here are the six ways to enter Nigerian University without JAMB in 2026:

IJMB Programme

The Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) is one of the most popular alternatives to JAMB.

Runs for about 9–10 months

Students study three relevant subjects

Successful candidates can gain Direct Entry admission into 200 level

Accepted by many federal and state universities

JUPEB Programme

The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) is another strong option.

Mostly accepted by universities in Southern Nigeria

Gives access to 200 level through Direct Entry

Requires O’Level credits in relevant subjects

Direct Entry (DE)

Candidates with qualifications such as:

ND, NCE, HND, IJMB, JUPEB and A-Level certificates can apply for Direct Entry into 200 level without writing UTME.

Pre-Degree or Remedial Programmes

Many universities run pre-degree or remedial programmes that prepare students for admission.

Usually lasts one academic session

Students can transition into full degree programmes after completion

Offered by several Nigerian universities

Diploma Programmes

Some universities and polytechnics offer diploma programmes.

Students can later convert to degree programmes

May qualify for Direct Entry admission into 200 level after completion

Private Universities

Some private universities offer admission without strict JAMB requirements.

Internal screening may replace UTME

Often accepts low JAMB scores or no UTME at all
