The Kano House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, with recommendations aimed at strengthening the regulation and management of private and voluntary educational institutions across the state.
The bill was passed during yesterday’s plenary after lawmakers considered and adopted the report of the House Committee on Education, which conducted public hearings and engaged relevant stakeholders before presenting its findings to the Assembly, reports Channels TV.
Speaking after the passage of the bill, the Speaker of the House, Ismail Falgore, commended members for their contributions throughout the legislative process, describing the amendment as a significant step toward improving the administration of private and voluntary schools in Kano State.
The amended bill provides for the creation of the office of Executive Secretary to ensure more effective management of the board.
It also introduces a provision requiring private and voluntary schools and institutions to obtain approval before increasing tuition or other fees.
In addition, the legislation is designed to protect parents and guardians from arbitrary fee hikes by private educational institutions, ensuring that any proposed increase is subject to regulatory oversight.
The amendment followed extensive consultations with stakeholders during public hearings organised by the House Committee on Education before its final consideration and passage by the Assembly.
