Sultan of Sokoto asks Muslims in Nigeria to begin Ramadan moon sighting tomorrow

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 16, 2026 1210 Minutes read0

Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has directed Muslim faithful across the country to begin sighting the new moon of Ramadan 1447 AH tomorrow, Tuesday, February 17, 2026.

In a statement signed by Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, the monarch said “Muslims are requested to watch for the crescent moon after sunset on Tuesday and report its sighting promptly to the village/district heads or directly to the Sultanate Council through the following numbers:

0803 715 7100, 0806 630 3077, 0803 596 5322, 0803 594 5903 and 0706 714 6900.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (sawm), communal prayer (salah), reflection, and community.

It is also the month in which the Quran is believed to have been revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

The annual observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam and lasts 29 to 30 days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next.
