Super Eagles Euro round-up: Sanusi, Moffi win Portuguese league title

The FrontierThe FrontierMay 4, 2026 1045 Minutes read0

•Zaidu Sanusi celebrates winning Liga Portugal title with Porto

The Nigerian duo of Zaidu Sanusi and Terem Moffi are league champions after winning the Primeira Liga title with FC Porto on Saturday following a 1–0 victory over Alverca at the Estádio Do Dragão.

For Sanusi, it is his second league trophy with Porto after also winning the title back in the 2021/22 season, while Moffi who joined on loan from OGC Nice of France in January, is enjoying his first league triumph with the Portuguese club, reports The Guardian.

While Sanusi has scored one goal and made an assist in 17 league games for Porto this season, Moffi has also registered the same number of goal contributions in nine Primeira Liga matches.

TURKEY

Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray)

Victor Osimhen provided an assist but 10-man Galatasaray surprisingly lost 4-1 to Samsunspor in Saturday’s Turkish Super Lig encounter to delay their title celebrations.

Osimhen set up Yunus Akgün to give Galatasaray the lead very early on in the ninth minute of the match, making it his fifth Super Lig assist of the season.

The Nigerian international has made 51 Super Lig appearances since joining Galatasaray from which he has scored 39 goals, while he has netted 20 times this season.

ENGLAND

Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze (Fulham)

Calvin Bassey saw full action while Samuel Chukwueze was substituted on Saturday when Fulham suffered a 3-0 defeat to leaders Arsenal in a one-sided Premier League London derby at the Emirates Stadium.

Chukwueze failed to impress until the Nigerian international winger was yanked off for Joshua King in the 64th minute.

Alex Iwobi is currently recovering from the hamstring injury he sustained during Fulham’s 0-0 draw with Brentford in a Premier League London derby at the Gtech Community Stadium a fortnight ago.

Tolu Arokodare (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Tolu Arokodare was in action for relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland in Saturday’s Premier League game at the Molineux Stadium as Daniel Ballard became the second defender to be sent off for pulling the hair of the Nigerian forward.

Everton defender Michael Keane had received a straight red for the same offence in January, and the Englishman also got a three-match suspension for violent conduct.

Ballard was holding and pulling a handful of Arokodare’s hair as they moved backwards to receive a high ball, until the Nigerian went down, grabbing his head.

Referee Paul Tierney sent off Ballard after reviewing the incident on the pitch-side monitor, before Arokodare came off for Tom Edozie in the 93rd minute.

SPAIN

Umar Sadiq (Valencia); Ademola Lookman (Atletico Madrid)

Umar Sadiq fired a blank on Saturday when Valencia’s survival hopes suffered a huge dent following a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in a La Liga fixture at the Mestalla Stadium.

The lanky Nigerian striker played for the full 90 minutes while compatriot Ademola Lookman was an unused substitute for Atletico.

Sadiq had emerged as the hero for a second consecutive La Liga match last weekend by scoring the winning goal as Valencia beat fellow relegation-fighters Girona 2-1 also at the Mestalla.

GERMANY

Nathan Tella (Bayer Leverkusen)

Nathan Tella scored a goal and also contributed an assist to help Bayer Leverkusen maintain its push for Champions League football by thrashing fellow top-four hopefuls RB Leipzig 4-1 in Saturday’s German Bundesliga match at the BayArena.

Having become a regular since returning from injury, Tella set up Patrik Schick to score Leverkusen’s opening goal in the 25th minute, making it his third assist in his last five league appearances.

The Super Eagles winger was, however not satisfied as he went ahead to score his first Bundesliga goal of the 2025/26 season, finishing from close range in the 45th minute.

Despite Tella seeing his campaign heavily disrupted by injuries, with the 26-year-old missing the opening seven matches of the season due to a knee bruise and also missing another eight games with a foot injury, he has scored one goal and made six assists in 17 Bundesliga appearances this season.

SCOTLAND

Kelechi Iheanacho (Celtic)

Kelechi Iheanacho played for only 20 minutes but those were enough to see him emerge as the match winner for Celtic who defeated Hibernian at Easter Road on Sunday to keep their Scottish Premiership title hopes alive.

The Super Eagles striker came off the bench in the 70th minute and made an immediate impact, finding the net only two minutes later to make it his fourth goal in the last five games for Celtic.

ITALY

Maduka Okoye, Kingsley Ehizibue (Udinese)

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye kept his ninth clean sheet of the season on Saturday while Kingsley Ehizibue scored to help Udinese beat Torino 2-0 in Serie A encounter.

Ehizibue continued his fine scoring form, this time putting Udinese ahead when the ball dropped kindly for the wing-back, who reacted quickly to poke it into the net in stoppage time of the first half.

It was his second goal in as many games, and the first time the Nigerian defender will hit the back of the net in two consecutive Serie A matches since arriving in Italy in 2022.

Okoye also stood firm in goal for Udinese, organising his defence well and making the necessary saves even as the goalkeeper completed 27 of his 38 passes.

Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Rafiu Durosinmi (Pisa)

Ebenezer Akinsanmiro and Rafiu Durosinmi suffered relegation from the Italian Serie A on Friday following Pisa’s 2-1 defeat against Lecce.

Akinsanmiro joined Pisa on loan from Inter Milan at the start of the season while Durosinmi arrived from Viktoria Plzen during the January transfer, but the latter has struggled for form, scoring just one goal in 12 appearances for the club.

AUSTRIA

Moses Usor (LASK Linz)

Moses Usor was on the score sheet over the weekend with his goal helping LASK Linz to win the Austrian Cup following a 4-2 extra time victory against Altach.

For Usor who continued his brilliant form with an 11th minute equaliser to make it 1-1, he scored for the third consecutive game as LASK made history.

The Nigerian forward has so far hit the back of the net 14 times this season, playing a key role as LASK finally ended their 61-year wait for a trophy.

CYPRUS

Francis Uzoho (Omonoia Nicosia)

Francis Uzoho has also emerged as a league champion this season after winning the Cypriot First Division title with Omonoia Nicosia following a 3–0 trouncing of Aris Limassol on Saturday.

For Uzoho who has been Omonia’s second choice goalkeeper this season, but has been very reliable when called upon, this is his third trophy with the club, but his first league title since joining them on a permanent transfer back in 2021.

The Super Eagles goalkeeper has made five league appearances this season and kept three clean sheets, conceding thrice. The 27-year-old also has two clean sheets from five games in the Conference League.
