Supreme Court verdict: Defection issue remains unresolved – Rivers govt insists

The Rivers State Government has stated that it is awaiting a comprehensive briefing on the implications of the Supreme Court’s judgment regarding state allocation and local government administration.

In a statement today, the Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, said the government will thoroughly assess the situation upon receiving detailed information before deciding on the next course of action in the best interest of the state and its residents.

He urged the people of Rivers State to remain calm, and law-abiding, and continue their daily activities while the government seeks further clarity on the ruling, reports Channels TV.

Johnson, however, clarified that the issue of defection of the 27 lawmakers was not a matter before the Supreme Court, as it is currently pending before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

He emphasised that, in this context, Martin Amaewhule and the 26 others were still seen in the eyes of the Justices as lawmakers.

The commissioner reaffirmed the Rivers government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the state’s best interests in all matters.
