Tanker crashes in Ibadan, spills 15,000 litres of diesel

•A fallen fuel tanker

A tanker carrying 15,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) crashed and spilt its content at the Toll Gate area along the Ibadan-Ife Expressway.

The incident occurredlast night when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to somersault and veer off the road, reports The PUNCH.

Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement today, saying emergency officials responded swiftly to contain the situation.

He said, “The agency’s personnel, led by CFS Adedeji, swiftly responded to the emergency call. On arrival, we met a fallen MAN trailer tanker with registration number Lagos: EPE 299 XN of 15,000 litres capacity, loaded with Automotive Gas Oil, which had lost control while in motion and swerved to the roadside, with its content gushing out.

“We quickly covered the spillage with chemical foam compound to neutralise the flame of the liquid, which can trigger naked fire from a close or distant place.

“The accident was due to a lack of absolute concentration whilst driving by the truck driver. Vehicular movement has been restored to the road.”

Akinwande added that the Federal Road Safety Corps officials were at the scene of the accident to control the traffic.
