The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) yesterday announced the conclusion of the search and rescue mission on the Ill-fated boat that sank along River Venue in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, stating that out of the 104 passengers, fourteen persons were rescued alive, 21 dead bodies were recovered while 69 persons are still missing.
In a statement released on its X handle last night, NEMA said it has reached an agreement with local divers to keep watch.
According to the NEMA statement, “NEMA Yola Operations Office on 29th October 2023, received a report from Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA) of a mishap involving a motorized boat with 104 passengers comprising of 42 men, 45 women, and 17 children sailing from Binnari to Mayo Ranewo community, Karim Lamido LGA in Taraba State.
“Search and rescue operations were activated and out of the 104 passengers, 14 persons were rescued, 21 dead bodies were recovered while 69 persons are still missing.
“Search and Rescue operations have been called off while we reached an agreement with local divers to keep watch.
“The Deputy Governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Aminu Abdullahi Alkali together with other stakeholders on Tuesday, 31st October,2023 visited the scene of the incident.”
