Throwback: I would rather stay at home than work for APC, says former Governor Fayose

Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, once declared that he had no interest in serving in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying he would rather stay at home than work under the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Fayose made the remarks on October 15, 2025, during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme.

The former governor, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, disclosed that Tinubu had offered him an appointment, but he politely declined, reports The PUNCH.

Fayose insisted he had no desire to return to public office after serving two terms as governor.

“Have you seen me taking an appointment from the APC? Asiwaju asked me, ‘What would we give you?’ I said, ‘Nothing, sir.’

“At 65, I’d rather be at home, being more responsible, doing other things that I need to do.

“I’ve served well. Two-time governor, I’ve done well. Tomorrow will hold itself,” he had said.

Fayose also stressed that although he enjoyed a cordial personal relationship with Tinubu, it did not translate into political allegiance.

He said, “I’ve not been with APC, but I’ve been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time. That is the truth.”

Fayose added that his interventions on national issues were driven by conviction rather than a desire for political appointments or personal gain.

However, despite those remarks, President Tinubu, yesterday, appointed Fayose as Chairman of the Board of the Rural Electrification Agency.

The appointment was announced in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Fayose’s appointment was among 26 appointments to the boards of 10 federal government agencies and commissions.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced 26 new appointments to 10 federal government agencies and commissions, with the former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, emerging as chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency,” the statement said.

The presidency added that all the appointments took immediate effect.
