A new political mobilisation platform, “Tinubu Must Go,” has emerged ahead of the 2027 general election, with its promoters calling for the opposition parties to unite behind a single presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The campaign, according to one of its leaders, Barrister Hamza Nuhu Dantani, is being driven by activists who are dissatisfied with the direction of the federal government and want to mobilise Nigerians around their opposition to Tinubu’s bid for another term, reports Daily Trust.
Dantani, a private legal practitioner, disclosed this in an interview with a Northern-based blog, “Arewa Updates”, explaining that the campaign was conceived primarily as a public enlightenment platform rather than a conventional political organisation.
He said the group has no formal structure of offices and political positions, describing its approach as a grassroots chain of mobilisation in which individuals are encouraged to educate others about the campaign’s objectives.
“We aim to sensitise the people. It is about one person enlightening another and building public awareness ahead of the 2027 election,” Dantani said.
The campaign’s immediate political objective, he explained, is to build sufficient public opposition to Tinubu’s re-election while encouraging rival political parties to put aside their differences and work towards a common platform.
Dantani accused the administration of falling substantially short of its campaign promises, alleging that less than five per cent of the commitments made by the President had been fulfilled.
He presented the claim as one of the reasons the activists decided to begin a wider mobilisation against the administration, as the removal of the petrol subsidy also featured prominently in his criticism.
According to Dantani, the policy has contributed to the economic difficulties confronting millions of Nigerians and remains one of the major grievances driving the campaign.
He further alleged that the administration had subjected opposition figures and government critics to undue pressure, while accusing it of taking actions that, in his view, raised concerns about democratic governance.
Dantani cited the federal government’s 2025 intervention in Rivers State, including the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara during the period of emergency rule, as an example of what he described as measures inconsistent with democratic principles.
The presidency, however, had justified the intervention on the grounds of the prolonged political crisis and deterioration of governance in the state.
Despite its unequivocal opposition to Tinubu’s return to office, the campaign has not adopted or endorsed any presidential candidate for 2027.
Responding to a question on the candidate the group intends to support, Dantani said no decision had been taken, but expressed the hope that opposition parties would eventually agree on a single candidate capable of confronting Tinubu at the polls.
“We have not chosen any candidate for now,” he said, stressing that the campaign would prefer an arrangement in which the opposition parties unite rather than divide their votes among several presidential contenders.
