Tinubu’s security emergency without arrests is ineffective – Former DSS boss Amachree

Former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has said President Bola Tinubu’s recently declared nationwide security emergency will only be effective if sponsors and saboteurs of insecurity are arrested and prosecuted.

Amachree stated this during an interview on Channels Television last night.

According to him, “I think there is need that for this state of emergency to be more effective, there should be arrests. Let us not just mention that these people have been identified as financiers and we’ve not seen any arrest.

He was responding to questions on alleged sabotage within the security architecture, including the killing of Major General Musa Uba and reports of military withdrawal prior to the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.

“I think that there are saboteurs, and we should know that both in the military and in politics, they are all over the place. But I am happy that the new Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has said that he is going after them. Besides those, we need to also rein in the financiers and the supporters,” he said.

Amachree insisted that concrete actions must accompany government declarations.

“There should be arrest, and of course we should create fears in their hearts to make them be sure that they cannot just do anything and get away with it.

“It’s not just a situation where you are threatening the country and then nothing is happening to you and you just move on. I think the government needs to stamp its feet down.”

President Tinubu, on November 26, declared a nationwide security emergency in response to the surge in attacks and abductions by gunmen and suspected terrorists.

He added that the police and the military had been authorised to recruit more personnel.

Tinubu also disclosed that police training facilities had been upgraded nationwide and approved the use of selected National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as training depots to accelerate the expansion of security manpower.
