Top 5 Nollywood films to see in cinemas this January

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 10, 2026 1753 Minutes read0

Nollywood is riding a serious high right now, and January 2026 has turned cinemas across Nigeria into buzzing hotspots of entertainment.

Whether you’re craving emotional drama, laugh-out-loud comedy, sweeping historical epics, or pulse-pounding action, this month’s box office offerings deliver on every front, reports The Nation.

We’ve rounded up five standout films currently dominating Nigerian cinemas.

From family-centered struggles to myth-laden warfare and audacious heists, here are the Five Nollywood films you should see in cinemas this January:

(1) Behind The Scenes

Funke Akindele proves once again why she remains one of Nollywood’s most bankable stars with this emotionally charged drama that mirrors real-life struggles many Nigerians know too well. The film follows Aderonke “Ronky-Fella” Faniran, played with depth and vulnerability by Scarlet Gomez, a wealthy real estate powerhouse whose open-handed generosity slowly becomes her downfall.

Surrounded by family and friends who exploit her kindness, Ronke faces emotional exhaustion and financial strain. Strong performances from Iyabo Ojo, Uzor Arukwe, Ibrahim Chatta, and Ini Dima-Okojie enrich the story, while Tobi Bakre shines as her entitled younger brother. Destiny Etiko and Uche Montana further elevate this poignant tale about boundaries, sacrifice, and the hidden cost of being everyone’s saviour.

(2) Oversabi Aunty

Toyin Abraham Ajeyemi headlines this witty yet thought-provoking comedy as Toun, a deeply religious church usher who believes it is her divine duty to correct everyone around her.

Her well-meaning interference soon spirals into chaos, turning her home into a moral war zone and culminating in an unforgettable wedding introduction gone wrong. Featuring an impressive cast that includes Mike Ezuruonye, Jemima Osunde, Enioluwa Adeoluwa, Ngozi Ezeonu, and Queen Nwokoye, the film balances humour with hard lessons about judgment, self-awareness, and the dangers of excessive righteousness.

(3) Colours of Fire

Under the direction of Niyi Akinmolayan, Colours of Fire unfolds as a visually rich and emotionally intense epic set in a mythical past. Uzor Arukwe stars as Akinbode, a feared warrior tasked with eliminating a dangerous enemy threatening his people. His mission takes an unexpected turn when he falls in love with Moremi, played by Osas Ighodaro, a woman from the rival tribe he has been taught to despise.

Their forbidden love ignites conflict that forces both sides to confront generations of hatred.

With commanding performances from Femi Branch, Ibrahim Chatta, Mercy Aigbe, and Gabriel Afolayan, the film blends romance, war, and folklore into a powerful cinematic experience.

(4) Gingerrr

For fans of fast-paced thrillers, Gingerrr delivers tension, style, and adrenaline in equal measure. Dubbed the heist film of the year, the story follows four women driven by desperation, revenge, and buried secrets as they plan a daring robbery that could change their lives forever.

Led by Bisola Aiyeola, Bukunmi “KieKie” Adeaga-Ilori, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Wumi Toriola — who also double as executive producers — the film thrives on sharp dialogue, suspense, and unpredictable twists. Supporting roles from Lateef Adedimeji, Timini Egbuson, and Shaffy Bello add depth to this gritty, edge-of-your-seat ride.

(5) Agesinkole 2 (King of Thieves)

Femi Adebayo returns with the long-awaited sequel to his 2022 smash hit, reigniting the legend of the feared outlaw Ajeromi. Agesinkole 2 plunges viewers back into a troubled kingdom where corruption, power struggles, and ancient forces collide once more.

Odunlade Adekola reprises his role as the embattled king, joined by an expansive cast that includes Toyin Abraham, Yemi Solade, Muyiwa Ademola, Fathia Balogun Williams, and veteran icon Adebayo Salami.

Rich in Yoruba mythology, intense battles, and mystic symbolism, the film stands as a grand celebration of culture and cinematic ambition.

If you’re heading to the cinema this weekend, these five films offer something for every mood — and each one proves that Nollywood’s box office reign is only getting stronger.
