UniJos promotes 97 academic staff to professors – VC

The Vice Chancellor of University of Jos Professor Tanko Ishaya, has announced that between 2021 to date, 97 academic Staff have been promoted to become Professors at the University.

“97 academic staff of the institution were promoted to the rank of professorship till date,” Ishaya stressed.

The Vice Chancellor stated his while marking his 3 years in Office at the Senate Chambers of the University, reports Saturday Independent.

According to him, over 345 academic staffs also benefited from various training initiatives initiated by the school management between July this year 2024 to date.

“About 120 were trained, two enjoyed overseas training. Over 100 None academic staff benefited training within the period under review.”

Professor Ishaya who is the 10th substantive vice chancellor of the institution,said he assumed mantle of leadership on 1st December, 2021,and has done his best to lift up the standard of the University.

He vowed to provide conducive academic environment, hinge on accountability, equity, and transparency which should be in tandem with the University Act and status.

“We are truly committed towards actualizing our mandate, prioritizing staff and students welfare,” he assured.

“We have continued to focus on quality assurance to maintain and improve on our desired academic standards: We currently have 70 out of 75 of our programmes with National Universities Commission (NUC) with full accreditation status.

“This is about 93.3% of the programmes that we run in contrast to 57.3% before we assumed office in December 2021.

“We have established our academic calendar. We have created two additional faculties and over 20 new academic programmes that are contemporary and currently awaiting NUC resource verification exercise.”

On Research, the Vice Chancellor said a consortium of Nigerian Universities and Inter-University Centres in collaborated with the University of Jos has developed a DNA-based indigenous COVID-19 vaccine code named SJN3T CorVac Jos, NARICT, NIMR, NVRI and TetFund), funded by TETFund.

“Development of an Anti-Tick Vaccine, the University won 9 TETFUND NRF awards out of 32 concept notes submitted in the 2023 NRF grant cycle (9 out 185 TETFUND NRF awards to all Nigerian Universities in 2024).”

The VC, further revealed that the Department of Theatre and Film Arts won a grant titled- Wake the flies. Humanitarian crisis in Plateau state, Nigeria, from Hessen Film and Medien, Frankfurt in February 2024.

“The grant is a production funding for young talents. The value of the grant is 25,000€, saying the University also got a funding in July 2024, from the National Communications Commission (NCC), Abuja for research on Smartware Technology Based Security and Privacy Awareness Solution for Mobile Device Users.

On sporting development, the Vice Chancellor of University of Jos, said plans have gone into advance stage to ensure successful hosting of the 27th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) in 2025.
